India beat Bangladesh by 87 runs in WC opener


In the opening match of the ICC World Cup 2011 between the co-hosts, India defeated Bangladesh by 87 runs. India gave a huge target of 371 runs to Bangladesh in the first match played at Shere Bangla National Stadium, Mirpur, on Saturday.

Bangladesh won the toss and elected to field first. Sachin Tendulkar who was playing his 6th World Cup scored only 28 runs. Ghambir scored 39 runs but Virendar Sehwag played a thrilling innings of 175 runs along with young talent Kohli who completed his maiden world cup century in the last over of the match. India put a huge total of 17o runs at the loss of 4 wickets and with the help of twin centuries.

Chasing this momentous target, Bangladesh showed tremendous resistance to World Cup favorites. Tamim Iqbal and Shakib Al Hasan remained prominent batsmen who scored 70 and 55 runs respectively. MM Patel proved to be disastrous for Bangladesh as he took 4 wickets and collapsed opponents’ batting line.
